It is helpful to identify and affirm what it is like to be near God, and what it is like not to be near God. This way, when you find your surroundings similar to being near or far from God, you can position where you are now. This is then a reminder to me, am I near or far? Am I close? Am I feeling those things, and experiencing what comes when I am close? If not, then I know what I need to do.
